AP 539/839 - Issues in Theological Methodology
Purpose: To look at some representative cases of theological method of influence in the Reformed tradition. To pay particular attention to the relation of philosophy and theology. To form an estimate of some contemporary proposals regarding theological method. Topics to be covered will include Augustine and Platonism, Edwards and Lockean trinitarianism, and a number of modern proposals, especially those of John R Franke in The Character of Theology, Kevin Vanhoozer on Charles Hodge, and the central proposal of The Drama of Doctrine.
Format: the course will begin with a joint reading of part of Book VII of Augustine’s Confessions (117-132 in the Chadwick translation), followed by class teaching on the other topics, followed by short student presentations.
